The big highlights of this season were the transplanter and the boom sprayer. Instead of a stand and plant or hand planting we were able to sit and feed a transplanter. After trials and adjustments to our tray preparation we realized that particular model would never work the way we want it to, but we could make it work with an extra set of hands following the machine on the ground. It’s still a whole lot faster than hand planting. The boom sprayer allowed for high pressure spray applications that provided much better coverage and more efficient spraying.

At the beginning of the year, we built a building from lumber that Evan cut and milled himself. We needed a centralized storage facility dedicated to farm tools. Our BCS tractor, hoes, rakes, wheelbarrows, shade cloths, and everything else had a home just steps away from greenhouses and the closer fields.

The lettuce was a sure thing by this time. Customers fell in love with the blend and constantly told me they wouldn’t buy lettuce at the grocery store, many even stating they changed their side dish at restaurants because the difference in quality was so drastic.

I began growing some herbs this season and selling them in the store. With too much going on and not enough planning I definitely didn't get a good start to the herb business, but I learned a lot about the production side.

Although you see a nice harvest of brussels sprouts down there, we have since given up on the idea of being brussels sprout farmers in southeast Oklahoma as we really don’t have consistent shoulder seasons to make it work. After many failures we added it to the short list of things that we will just never make profitable.
